I suddenly realized last night that I hadn't made any plans for today. Yikes! So this morning I decided we should go check out Ellis's new daycare out at the University. It seems like so long ago when we first went to the University and I put Ellis on the waiting list. This daycare wants us to come in together for a few days to get acclimatized. They seem better that way than the current daycare.
Well - it took us a while to get moving. It was super hot today. I knew it was going to be bad because every person we met said - "hot isn't it!"
We actually saw someone in the building elevator (first person), then our landlady, then the ferry driver, and everybody we saw on the way to the University. Ellis's new teacher said - "so you're from Canada? Isn't the weather awful? I didn't realize what dry heat verses muggy was till I went to Sydney this year at Christmas." This made me wonder a bit - as she's been at the daycare for 7 years - I can't believe this is the first time she's experienced dry heat in her life!
By the time we got to the daycare it was noon (good timing). The kids were all eating their lunches. At least I had packed Ellis's lunchbox. They all sat there and stared each other down - I eventually started a conversation. There was a Hugo, George, Lily, Vassily, Quinn and Davey at his table. I asked them how old they were. They got a bit inventive. It ranged from 2 and a half to 5, but some chimed in (Lily) that they were 6. I investigated the other lunches. Yup - I'm the best mom, although Vassily looked like he had a good lunch (no judging of course).
Samantha (Ellis's teacher) then mentioned it was nap time. Yup. "I guess we'll go." I said. I felt a tug on my arm. "mummy, I want to nap."
"WHAT?"
"I want to nap."
"uh, ok - Samantha, can Ellis stay and nap?"
So Samantha got a mat for Ellis to sleep on and he promptly did. All the other kids were still running around like maniacs.
Samantha says to me - "he's sleeping."
"yes."
Of course, Rowan was wide awake, so we sat there and tried to entertain ourselves while Ellis slept. Rowan picked up various unidentifiable things off the floor and ate them until Samantha sent us over to the baby side of the daycare (safer). So Rowan and I got banished.
The babies on the baby side did seem a tad happier than at Ellis's current daycare, but I still have a hard time imagining spending day after day there. The music alone would drive me insane (even if I was a baby). Rowan crawled around and tried to make friends, but they all eyed him suspiciously - what are YOU so happy about. I decided I was glad that I'm not leaving him there, even if it was only one day a week. So many babies - so few carers to give love. At least on the kid side, they seemed like a gang of happy kids - they get to do crafts. The babies just wander around in circles.
Ellis woke up at 1:50 so we ran over to Cyp's office (hot!) as he had a meeting at 2:00. Fortunately, meeting was delayed so we could chat with G. Anita, Suzy and Max. Then we wandered by the pond where we saw a flock of cockatoos (see if you can spot one in the picture above - probably can't darn Iphone). Then we caught the bus and ferry home. Ellis likes to sit in the jump seat right behind the driver on the bus and then he hold very loud conversations (as I'm sitting a few seats back).
"I THINK WE TOOK THE WRONG BUS MOMMY."
"no Ellis, we're on the right bus."
"LOOK MOMMY - THERE ARE SPARKLES ON THIS BUS."
"Yes Ellis - um hmm."
Poor bus driver had Ellis yelling in his ear the entire trip.
Had a bit of a hike to the ferry after the bus. Ellis asked the entire way.
"Can I play the Wii on the way home?"
We get to a certain spot and he has to get out as he has to race me down the ramp to the river walk where we catch our ferry. Highly competitive he is. In fact, I've noticed that he only tries new things if it's a competition. At the park on the weekend, he finally went on the swing as there was another kid his age on the swing next to him.
"Don't push me mommy. I can do it myself."
He also tried a tricycle the other day as other kids had been using it. He has not grasped the concept of steering. I kinda think he should have that down by now. Maybe Mario Kart will teach him - although it's not looking good. We play against each other and we usually have to switch controllers at some point as he hasn't moved (or he's gone backwards). Today, his favourite game on the Wii was the ski jump. He loved it when he crashed and turned into a giant snowball (with skis poking out) tumbling down the hill. In fact he had a breakdown when I helped him actually jump.
"go away mummy that is not the right way."
Right.
He can now turn on the TV, Wii, find his Mii and get it all set up without any help. I figure it's better than taking up smoking.
I did enforce a swim so we did something active. Ellis was feeling chatty - there were actually other people in the pool today. He made a point of going over to where they were and jumping in.
"did you see that?" he asked.
"we have to go now, mommy has to make dinner. Have a good swim."
