Well, we slept in (till about 8:30) so did not get to visit St. Kilda before heading out to the airport. We had our last fabulous Bob coffee, packed up and were soon on our way. Thanks again so much Sue and Bob for being such great hosts. I loved Melbourne - and I loved hanging out at your house - you were great company and I know the kids and Cyp also had a great time. I was very sad be leaving.
We made it to the airport (thanks Tom Tom) and handed in the car. No comments about the extra ding in the bumper from our accident. Phew. Got to the airport and noted that it was quite busy. I was starting to panic as I saw the lineup for check in but thankfully, Cyp belongs to Qantas Club so we got to go the business check in line - Hooray! The agent was super nice (I think he was a tad hungover, so kept saying "take your time"
As we were going through security, Ellis hefted his new Dora suitcase up on the conveyer and then placed his shoes in a bucket - all without prompting - he is getting to be a good little traveler.
Made it to the gate (had to forgo the Qantas Club lounge this time as it was on the other side of the airport - Melbourne airport is bigger than Brisbane). I had a better travel strategy today. Cyp gets to sit in the middle, Ellis got the window and I got the aisle. This was way better. We had two very obnoxious Italian kids behind us. Two boys about 8 and 10. Dad sat across the aisle from them and slept the entire flight and mom had here head out the window. Kids yelled "mamma mia" and other things the entire flight. I took Ellis to the toilet twice (I'm thinking this time) and moved around a bit with Rowan so the two hours went faster (not for Cyp - Ellis didn't want to play with his leapster for some reason). There was some turbulence at one point and we had to do up our seatbelts again. "Is this our stop?" asked Ellis. Uh, no.
Got home and caught a cab - "can you tell me how to get there?" asked our cabbie. Hmm
Ellis chatted the entire way home. A sample:
"when I'm an adult, I will send Rowan to school.... forever."
"I will have two birthday cakes - first Emilie's and then yours"
He talked a lot about Canada and Australia and Emilie's house and everyone else. Too bad I can't remember specifics, but I think the visit and going on a plane dredged up all these emotions about moving away from Canada.
Reentry was rough - as it always is - running around unpacking, kids clamoring for attention, trying to make dinner from the dead food in the fridge. Eventually we got Ellis to bed (though he wouldn't stay there) and we watched Picnic at Hanging Rock. Of course, didn't make it to the end.
