Schools

Another one of the moms that I've met keeps a blog. She has a boy the same age as Ellis and he goes to school out at the Uni as well. Unfortunately I read her blog the other day and she was mentioning how she loves her boy's school. It has computers and an integrated white board and different learning stations etc. It got me thinking about Ellis's daycare. I started to feel like a bad mummy again. I found a daycare - they said they would take him, I said "hooray!"
That said, Ellis's daycare seems ok - he actually asked me if he could go everyday (I think I mentioned that already) and I really like his teachers. It is a bit shabby though and definitely no computers. Oh well - we shall see how it goes. He seemed to have another good day on Friday.
The thing is - I don't really know what to compare a potential daycare to. It kinda reminds me of Douglas Park and the preschool that I went to, so that seems about right. It's when I start reading the promotional material for other daycares that I start to worry.

While he was at school I sorted boxes and paper - it is my current zen project. I finished which is good - now I can do something else with my life like clean and act as referee. Plus, I only encountered one other spider and it was small and harmless according to the man who was redoing our driveway.

I must say, I'm much more casual with Rowan - he just lumps around the house following me as I do my thing on Ellis at school days. He helped me straighten papers a bit. We got quite hot and sticky doing this so I decided we better go for a swim to cool down. As he was floating in his ring, he suddenly went putuh and spat something out. When I pulled him out of his ring, I discovered he'd been sucking on a very sharp and pointy nail. Good thing he didn't swallow it!

I went to pick Ellis and Cyp up at the Uni -stopped at the liquor store first where I picked up 8 bottles of wine for $50. I bought some cleanskins - this is wine produced by growers that have too much stock, so they just bottle it and put a generic label on it. We tested it in Melbourne - seemed fine, so I thought I'd try it again. Today Cyp saw an add for $2/bottle cleanskins. Should perhaps try it.

My drive to the Uni continues to be a quest to find a better route. I just can't describe the streets here - they are super steep and go all over and just don't make sense. I think I've found my route though. I think. I got the drive home down to 10 minutes. We have to take Bywong street to get to Toowong.

We dropped by the neighbors (and landlords) for drinks on Friday afternoon. The discussion revolved a bit around schools. There is very much a school thing - where you go seems to determine your fate. Hence my apprehension about daycare. Plus - it is too late for Ellis to go to private school here as you must go on the waiting list when the child is conceived. That is fine I guess - I never really wanted him to go to private school but now that he can't I feel that there's something wrong with they system.

Afterwards the sitters came by and Cyp and I walked to Toowong Village for dinner. It is not far really - takes about 15 minutes. It's doable at night when it has cooled down. We didn't take long, so we did a little walking tour of the neighborhood afterwards. It's odd - Queenslander mansion, six pack (apartment building with 6 units), workers cottage, empty lot, apartment, normal house. Quite a mix. Oh - and I saw a dead possum on the road. This car drove up, the women got out and went and picked up dead possum. That was weird - dinner?
